Request citation style for "Biotechnology and Bioengineering"

Hi,

I would like to request a citation style for "Biotechnology and Bioengineering" by Wiley.

A similar style is: European Cells and Materials Journal (although labeled invalid?)

The style required by Biotechnolog and Bioengineering is:

List of references should be in alphabetical order, without numbers.
Ie. excatly as European Cells and Materials Journal style.

References in the text as follows:
- if one author: (Adam, 1995)
- if two authors: (Dorow and O'Neal, 1974)
- if several authors: (Briggs et al., 1993)
- if several references: (Adam, 1995; Dorow and O'Neal, 1974)
I.e. excatly as in European Cells and Materials Journal style.

Journal titles should be abbreviated according to the Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index. I.e. exactly as for European Cells and Materials Journal style, except that there is no "." after each term of the abbreviation.

Journal articles in bibliography:
King VM, Armstorng DM. 1998. Numerical aspects of pontine, lateral reticular, and olivary projections. J Comp Neurol 390:537-551.
I.e. when comparing with European Cells and Materials Journal style:
- "." after last author
- same position for year (after last author, before title of publication), but no brackets, and with "." after the year.
- volume of journal not in bold
- no indication of doi behind pages of article
- article title: no capitals except for the first word of the title
- no space between the colon and page number

Books in bibliography:
Voet D, Voet JG. 1990. Biochemistry. New York: John Wiley & Sons. 1123 p.
I.e. when comparing with European Cells and Materials Journal style:
- same position for year (after last author, before title of publication), but no brackets, and with "." after the year.
- after the editing house "." and not ","
- no exact date of publishing after the name of the editing house

Book chapter:
Gilmor ML, Rouse ST, Levey AL. 1998. recpetor fusion proteins and analysis. In: Ariano MA, editor. Receptor localization. New York: Wiley-Liss. p 75-90.
I.e. when comparing with European Cells and Materials Journal style:
-same position for year (after last author, before title of publication), but no brackets, and with "." after the year.
- after "In" should be a colon
- after "In:" should be the name of the editors as cited at the beginning of publications, the last author being followed by ", editor." or ", editors."
- then title of book (with capitals only for the first word) followed by "."
- then "Place of publishing: Publishing house. p x-y."
(sorry, this one is quite different)

For websites, there are no clear indications, I suppose they might be similar to the rest, i.e.: same position for year (after last author, before title of publication), but no brackets, and with "." after the year.

The journal website gives the following instructions:
http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/117933915/grouphome/ForAuthors.html

As an example, cf.:

I would be very grateful for any help with this!

Thank you in advance.
  • OK, I'll have a look as soon as I can - looks like a very thorough request, should be easy to do.
  • I think I have it all:
    Go here,
    http://gist.github.com/219340
download using the Raw link on the top right,
install by dragging to an open FF window.
Please report back - I'll be happy to fix anything that's still not right. If everything is good I'll upload the style to the repository.
  • Dear Adam,

Thanks so much for the rapid reply.

Most of it looks fine, exactly the citation style the journal requires! Perfect.

The only thing I still have problems with is the journal abbreviation (between article title and pages): it doesn't show up correctly. I think it's partially my fault (the journal abbreviations are not always stored correctly in my library), and I think the xml code could may be also help... So:

    1. How could I make sure that zotero stores the journal abbreviations in a consistent way? F.ex., for Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, it sometimes stores "Appl Microbiol Biotechnol" and sometimes "Appl. Microbiol. Biotechnol". And again for some others, the journal title is indicated as a whole under "journal abbr", instead of indicating the abbreviation. How could I get it to store the correct abbreviations? Is there any setting I might change?

    2. Then, zotero takes over what is indicated under "Journal Abbr" and puts it into my bibliography as asked for, but it does not respect capital and small letters (i.d. I get f.ex."Appl microbiol biotechnol" or "Appl. microbiol. biotechnol", respectively). Is there some changes one could include in the code to get it as asked for by "Biotechnology and Bioengineering" (abbreviation without "." behind each word, each new word with first letter in capital, f.ex. Appl Microbiol Biotechnol) ?

    3. How would I manage the "." asked for, or not asked for behind each word of the journal abbreviations? Would this information be included in the code, or would I have to adjust the information in my zotero library accordingly?

Again, thank you so much for your help!
  • oh yes, I should have mentioned: Journal abbreviations aren't as of yet possible to do well with Zotero:
Currently, it just takes whatever is in the journal abbreviation field and many translators simply don't put data there, or don't get consistent data - so know, there is no setting, everything that isn't correct you have to do by hand. Zotero also cannot account for different abbreviation codes and cannot deal with periods versus no periods.
This last point is going to be changed in the next version of csl, which is relatively close to release - it will be able to strip away periods - so if you have a choice, input the abbreviations with periods.

There is absolutely nothing in the current csl code I can do about that.
  • ha ha

OK, well at least now I know ;-)

Thanks anyway, for the valuable advice, and for the great and rapid help previously!
  • the style is in the repository, please report any problems here
