Zotero Annotations sync to External PDF Reader (on Mac)

edited March 10, 2022
Hi all,

I love Zotero, and especially Zotero for iPad. Improved my workflow extremely. Also, I like and understand the idea of syncing annotations not on a PDF basis, but with your own standard.

However, on my Mac I would prefer keep using my own preferred PDF Reader (that is PDF Expert), due to more functionality, better usability, and better performance. Due to the internal annotation sync, I cannot simply open the PDF in the reader straight away. I know that it is possible to export a PDF with annotations to a new file.

What I would wish for that Zotero Mac automatically writes the Zotero-format annotations to the file (and possibly file annotations back to Zotero-format). This could happen everytime at sync time. Or, possibly also automatically everytime one wishes to open a file with an external reader.

Could something like this be considered for Zotero core? Or is there any plugin that does this or would consider implementing such functionality? (Zotfile would probably be not too far).

Thanks and all the best,
P
