"Google account you selected does not have permission to edit this document"

Hello. I am getting an error between Zotero and Google Docs integration where when I try to add a citation to my google doc, it says "Google account you selected does not have permission to edit this document." I have properly authenticated the google account that is owner/editor of the doc, and I even revoked authentication via the Google account dashboard and re-authenticated zotero account access. Anyone have any ideas on how to solve this problem? thanks!
  • This error is displayed when you first attempt to perform a Zotero action with your document, at which point you're prompted to select a user account. You should select an account that has access to the document there. Is that what you do? If so, does it work in a new document? What if you sign out from all google accounts and only log in with one?
  • Hi
I have exactly the same problem.
    * I am the owner.
    * Only one account is signed in.
    * Authentication is successful.
    * I did sign out and sign back in still not working.
    * Each time I try it goes for authentication without asking which account to be used and then the error appears. Note that only one google account is signed in.
    * I am using google chrome.
  • @ramyar.rmn: Try disabling all your other browser extensions.
  • @dstillman thanks for your suggestion. Tested and no luck unfortunately
  • @adomasven might have another suggestion, but you can try clearing all cookies for google.com and/or docs.google.com in your browser, which should trigger another login attempt, and try that with other extensions disabled.
  • @dstillman @adomasven still no luck. I even tried with a fresh Firefox browser and had the exact problem ! This problem even persist with creating new doc
  • Can you provide a Debug ID from the Zotero Connector for first trying to insert a citation into a new document after restarting both Zotero and your browser?
  • @dstillman thank you for your follow up
    zotero chrome extension: D1026539118
    zotero desktop: D596780734
  • We've never seen something like this but this seems like a Google Auth bug. Could you try revoking Zotero access to your account at https://myaccount.google.com/permissions then restart your browser and try using Zotero in Google Docs again?
  • @adomasven just did it. This time on authentication it asked me for choose the google account again so I did (note that there is only one account). but after successful authentication again the same problem and message appeared !!
  • Just to be clear, this isn't in a private window or anything? Firefox obviously works in general, but have you tried in a different browser?

Oh, sorry, I missed that you were using Chrome first. So you can reproduce this in both Chrome and Firefox with no extensions?

Possible there's something weird going on Google and your IP address. If you're able to try on a different network, that might be worth a shot.
  • dear daiken77,
Hi, I had same error, and because of IP restriction I could not connect to my google account properly. I just used a VPN and the error fiexed.
  • @ramyar.rmn
how could this happen? I have had the same problem, no matter what I did, I go the annoying error "The Google account you selected does not have permission to edit this document. Please try again, and be sure to choose the account with editing access."
and the zotero button stops working until u restart zotero! I tried everything you guys said and non of it works! I thought this problem has to be something global, but seems like not many people had that problem to even have a solution for it!
so if anyone could help, it would be very helpful...
  • @SalehDeldar: It's mainly just what Adomas says at the beginning — choosing the wrong Google account when prompted. You have to choose the account that you used to create the document (not anything related to your Zotero account).

If you're sure it's not that, we'd want to see a Debug ID from the Zotero Connector for first trying to insert a citation into a new document after restarting both Zotero and your browser, as above.
  • @dstillman:
I hope I did the debug id right:
    D231509354
an I am SURE it is the same account with the access that I log in to.
  • That's from Zotero. We need one from the Zotero Connector.
  • @dstillman
    D322711574
    this should be it
  • @SalehDeldar: That seems to show you getting a different error ("Zotero experienced an error updating your document. Would you like to view troubleshooting instructions?"). Are you sure you were getting the permission error there?

In any case, after restarting Zotero and your browser, can you cite in a new, empty document?
