don't do all at once, but 100 at a time should work.
Then do retrieve metadata - once again, don't do all at once, but do this in small groups.
In any cases, turning 1000pdfs into a working Zotero library will take some time, as you won't be able to retrieve metadata for all of them and some of it will be wrong.
