Can't save books via Zotero Connector

edited February 6, 2022
Hey Forum,

I fell in love with Zotero and use it everyday to organize my readings and new books for my research. But my zot-connector stopped working today and I am unable to make it work again.

I went through the troubleshooting, including reseting the translator, deactivating all other addons, reinstalling zot-connector:

https://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues

Nothing helped.

The addon surprisingly still takes data from a normal website. However, websites such as Amazon or goodreads don't work at all. Books are still recognized as such and I can still put tags and choose a collection to save it in, but no entry will appears in Zotero. It says "save to Zotero"

The item I tried to save on goodreads and amazon is the following:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/27091.Teaching_to_Transgress
https://www.amazon.de/Teaching-Transgress-Education-Practice-Translation/dp/0415908086

The translator name from step 10 (troubleshooting) should be Save to Zotero (amazon) and Zotero (goodreads). If I got it right.

I thank anyone in advance for help,

M.

Both of those sites require ISBN metadata lookups, and those are currently failing, possibly because the Library of Congress lookup service Zotero uses is down. That shouldn't cause all lookups to fail, since Zotero uses other services as well, but it's possible that's what's going on — we'll investigate.

In the meantime, you can paste an ISBN into Add Item by Identifier in the Zotero app, which should continue to work as long as metadata is available from the other services (which won't always be the case but is for the above example).
  • The Library of Congress lookup service is still down, so I've disabled those lookups in the Zotero Connector. This will allow saves that require ISBN lookups to work again, as long as metadata for the ISBN is available via one of the other services Zotero uses. Your Zotero Connector should auto-update within 24 hours, or you can update manually by clicking Update Translators in the Advanced pane of the Zotero Connector preferences.

We've identified the bug in the Zotero Connector that's causing the connection error to result in a hang, and we'll push a new Connector version soon with a fix so this doesn't happen again. For now, we'll keep an eye on the LoC service and re-enable LoC lookups in the Zotero Connector as soon as it's back up.
  • The LoC service is back up, and we've re-enabled the LoC translator.
