Zotero not retrieving citations

Hi,
I deleted PDFs on my library based on the instuctions by adamsmith on 26 March 2014 on this discussion (I saved an advanced search and deleted pdfs of that collection; worked fine):

https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/35712/removing-pdfs-to-free-up-space

However, now my Zotero won´t add any citations, I am using Chrome connector. Zotero says that "saved to Zotero" but still no citation gets to included on my library. I have tried several articles from multiple sites. Any thoughts on this?

Thank you for any tips!
Best regards,
Otto R.
  • Thanks @dstillman. Turns out the Oxford Acamdemic journal sites don't support Zotero.

No, you're totally misunderstanding that page. Zotero absolutely supports OUP, and has for many years. The point of that page is to tell you how to troubleshoot problems saving across many sites and, if you're still having trouble with a specific site, provide us with information we'd need to help you further. If you want help, you need to provide the info requested in the last step.
  • I was reaching to OUP for this problem and the customer service said (incorrectly, it seems) that they don´t support Zotero... But thanks again for the instructions, I will follow up with if the problem remains.

Generally speaking, Zotero supports sites, not the other way around. You should always reach out to us for help with Zotero. Read through Zotero Translators for more details.
  • @dstillman Hi! I'm still having problems for importing references from OUP sites. For example this one:
    https://academic.oup.com/ije/advance-article/doi/10.1093/ije/dyac028/6531917

Here is the Debug ID: D302691348. When trying to import, Zotero says 'Saving to MyLibrary'.
  • You have to reload the page before saving — otherwise the Debug ID is just showing the existing save popup reopening.
  • So reloading the Zotero Connector/Preferences tab after trying to import the reference? Yielding the Debug ID D514335619.

OK, you're receiving a "Loading..." webpage instead of a RIS file.

Does this happen at all times, or only after saving some number of items?

Does it work in another browser?
  • And what happens if you click on this URL with Zotero open?

    https://academic.oup.com/Citation/Download?resourceId=6531917&resourceType=3&citationFormat=0

Does Zotero prompt to import the file? Or does something else happen?
  • It happens at all times with OUP sites. When I clicked the link you provided, it asked:
Import items from academic.oup.com into Zotero?
I clicked OK and the first time it said I wasn´t logged in to Zotero (while Zotero library was open on the other tab all the time) and the second time the page just says Loading while being blank otherwise. I did not the Connector with other browser at this point as our institute recommends using only Chrome.
  • I clicked OK and the first time it said I wasn´t logged in to Zotero (while Zotero library was open on the other tab all the time) and the second time the page just says Loading while being blank otherwise.
Can you take a screenshot of what you're describing, upload it somewhere (e.g., Dropbox or Google Drive), and provide a link here? None of this sounds right.

OK, but this sounds like the page shown in the debug output. That's not from Zotero. That's either from OUP or from something that's intercepting your connection (e.g., some sort of proxy/security server on your network). You can check the site certificate info for to see if your connection is being intercepted.

This is an OUP URL for a RIS file, and if you're not getting a valid RIS file then Zotero certainly wouldn't be able to save it.
  • OK, so it seems it's firewall etc. as the second option (the blank loading page) keeps coming up. Here's the link for the screenshots, although I understood these don´t help at this stage: https://owncloud.thl.fi/index.php/s/6gerHj1uzvZbvDC . So I need to contact our IT support for a solution.
  • OK, that doesn't say you're not logged in — and it's referring to the Zotero app, not the Zotero web library in the other tab — but the message it's showing is wrong. We'll fix that, but the save is just failing because it's not a valid RIS file.

As I say above, it either OUP or a firewall. There's no reason to think it's the latter unless you check the site certificate info and see something that indicates something is intercepting the connection.

I can save from this page, though, so it's not a general problem with OUP.
