Zotero extracting publication month in my system's language

Dear all,

I have had a problem recently where when Zotero extracts most papers, it extracts the publication month in my system's language (Bulgarian in this case) rather than in English. However when this appears in the program, it cannot interpret the non-English month name as a month name. When using the Word plugin though, it will still put the month name in Bulgarian in the bibliography. Obviously I simply want Zotero to extract, store and output month names in English. Can anyone help me with this?
  • This is when you drag a pdf to Zotero or when using the button in the browser? Either way, could we get a link to the PDF or the URL you're saving from?
  • This happens when I use the button in the browser. And it happens with a number of papers, but here is an example URL: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/0269249X.2016.1256350
  • I don't think it's happening quite as you describe:
Zotero *is* recognizing the month name and localizing it in your System/Zotero language. (You should see MDY or so next to the date in Zotero, which confirms that).

In Word, Zotero is likely localizing the citation style (which style are you using?), so the month is Bulgarian there, too. You can set the citation style to English under Document Preferences in the document and that should give you English dates (and other things like "eds.").
  • Actually that's the thing, when it initially sources the date with the month name in Bulgarian, it only had DY next to it, so it doesn't recognise it. I have now changed the language preference to English as you instructed, I will write again if the scraping addon still sources Bulgarian month names. Thanks for the help!
  • @dstillman @AbeJellinek -- there's a lot going on internally and it's hard for me to test, but I do think there may be an issue with how a non-English system interacts with Zotero, at least with how dates are parsed in RIS https://github.com/zotero/translators/blob/master/RIS.js#L1514 which includes a lot of the built-in date parsing functions
