Errors when manually editing journal name
I have manually edited the names of some journals within Zotero as I wasn't happy with how some of them were written in the bibliography (missing capital letters, missing 'The' etc...).
However, the bibliography does not update. Refresh does not work, nor does forcing a refresh by changing citation style.
If I add the reference to my document as if it were a new citation, then the correct updated journal name is listed in the bibliography, however word treats it as a new citation and so it will appear as (Smith et al, 2022b) in the citation and bibliography, with the un-edited version as (Smith et al, 2022a). This is causing big problems for me if I want to cite a reference that has already been cited earlier on in the document as word seems to think the updated reference is a completely new reference rather than one that already exists, and so my bibliography is full of 'a,b' duplicates.
Is there any way to fix this? I am working on my thesis and have hundreds of references....

See https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/given_name_disambiguation#deleted_items for how to identify the item, if any, that a citation is linked to in your Zotero database.
It appears that the citation is no longer linked to my Zotero database as the 'open in library' bubble does not appear. This is a huge error on Zotero's part - changing the metadata such as author name or journal name in Zotero should not make your citation unlink from your word document!! I'm now going to have to go back and re-enter all the references that I edited - well over 100.
As you say, changing metadata and having those changes reflected in the citing document is a completely standard thing to do and many thousands of Zotero users do this every week without issues.
Did you ever use import/export on your Zotero database (which would break links to cited items)? Was the document authored in part on a different computer (and if so, how did you move the references)?
If you're not seeing the Open in My Library button, you either deleted the item you originally inserted or you created it on a different computer and haven't yet synced it to this one.
