Citations unlink from references when I transfer from one document to another

When I copy/paste chapters from an original Word document, where my citations are linked to my references, to the template for my dissertation (another Word document), my citations unlink and my references won't populate. Even when I go in and re-do each citation in the dissertation template, they still won't link. I would greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Make sure that the template you're copying to is actually in the correct format.
Most often than not it's a simple .doc, but it needs to be a .docx.
