Removing duplicate citations and updating bibliography
I had inadvertently cited two versions of the same papers from Zotero, meaning they are numbered as different citations in my Microsoft Word document. I've updated with a single version where I can but I have found that the obsolete duplicate reference isn't automatically removed from my document's bibliography. Refreshing the bibliography does not resolve this - in fact, when I have tried to delete the obsolete reference, refreshing the bibliography reinstates it. I have also tried Zotero>edit bibliography and used the arrow function to move the obsolete reference out of the bibliography. But this has left a space where the reference was (e.g. this list of references jumps from 62 to 64, where 63 was the removed reference) which refreshing the bibliography does not resolve.
Any suggestions? I'm on the point of submitting the paper for publication so most grateful for any assistance. Thanks.

You probably have a remnant left of the stray citation. Turn on field codes and look for the citation and delete all of the field code you find regarding the citation.
