Deduplication adding more items? (Mac)

My original collection had 8359 items

I then merged items in the "Duplicate Items" collection

My collection now has 6525 items

However, the sum of the items in the subcollections is 8343 items

Is the deduplicated collection correct or is the sum of the subcollections correct? Why are they two different values?

An item can be in multiple collections and items remain in all collections after deduplication, so the total count is right, the sum of subcollections is meaningless.
