Docs Citation help

I am writing a paper in Chicago style with footnotes, and when I insert a citation, it will often just be inserted as {updating} with a blue hyperlink. The citation will never actually update, even with the doc left alone for up to an hour. When I attempt to edit the citation it will tell me that Selected field (insert 6 randomized characters) not returned from Docs backend. I have just had to constantly delete the citation and try again until it works. I have also noticed this is a more common problem when I include page numbers in the initial citation, and have had more success citing the entire article or book, and then editing it after it has been inserted to include page numbers.

  • What size document? (Number of pages & approximate number of citations)
  • It is approximately 30 pages with ~70 citations
  • Hello,

    This is happening with me. I only started the document (google docs) before Christmas and it was fine and now I am seeing this issue. I have successfully used Google Docs before - currently my paper is 4 pages long as it's in the preliminary write phase. I am finding this issue with the 5 citation I am trying to add to the paper, the previous 4 having added without issue and complication.

  • @natesinger @k8mitchell Could you produce a video that shows this bug occurring, upload it somewhere and post a link here?
  • @adomasven - here you go, thank you for taking a look. I've put it onto dropbox. Let me know if you want the document as well.

  • What's the version of Chrome that you are using there? Does it work with default chrome? How about in a different browser like Edge or Firefox? Have you tried disabling other extensions in Chrome and seeing whether that helps?
  • Hi @adomasven , So my chrome version is "Chrome is up to date
    Version 96.0.4664.110 (Official Build) (64-bit)". I'm not sure how to respond to your question about the default chrome. I haven't checked out a different browser yet because I don't understand how that would impact - I'm not massively tech savvy.

    However, I created a copy of my Google Doc, removed all citations, copied and pasted the content into a Word Doc and then put the citations back it. This all appears to be working well. I also uninstalled and reinstalled both the zotero software from my laptop and my web extension - neither made any difference to the google doc. I even tried creating a new google doc with fresh citations and went back into zotero preferences to ensure it was using MRHA. What's odd is that the "back end" error message changes according to which citation I am trying to go back to edit (one says: "Selected field VmdRh1 not returned from Docs backend." and the other says: "Selected field mGE1QH not returned from Docs backend") It's not a massive issue as I can use Word docs, it's just if I want to add anything via my phone or tablet, it's going to be a pain in the neck and throw my formatting out ... but I really just need to get on and write this paper now. I am wondering if this is a google issue though, rather than a zotero issue - though I'm unsure how to deal with that if it is.

  • First of all, the Google Docs and Word integrations are very different and what you're seeing is specifically a Google Docs bug. Note that Zotero citations in Google Docs and Word are not compatible with one another and if you move your document from Google Docs to Word without following the document transfer procedure your citations will be flattened - become simple text and Zotero won't recognize them.

    In the video you posted the Chrome icon is not the standard one (there's some other black icon on top of it, and the default Chrome icon is next to it), which makes me assume you are not running a default version of Chrome. That could very well be the cause of the issue you're seeing. Testing on another browser will allow to identify whether it's a problem with the Chrome browser on your computer. Testing with other extensions disabled will allow to identify whether the bug is caused by some other extension you have in Chrome.
    What's odd is that the "back end" error message changes according to which citation I am trying to go back to edit (one says: "Selected field VmdRh1 not returned from Docs backend." and the other says: "Selected field mGE1QH not returned from Docs backend")
    That is exactly what we'd expect for the type of error you're seeing, but it's not clear what's causing it. The reason I am asking you to perform all the troubleshooting steps above is because I cannot reproduce the issue myself.
  • Hello,

    Thank you for the explanation. That is really helpful. Okay so I went onto the chrome account and ensured that my only other extension was disabled (PDF reader tool). I was confused about your question about Chrome because as far as I was concerned it was the default browser - the dark icon you are describing is my personal account icon - it's a photo. So, the chrome account is default, it's just personalised with my photo. I tried to log into the google doc using Edge (eugh!! :-) ). It just asks me to sign into my google account prior to opening the google doc.

    I know that the two (google and word) doc systems do not integrate. Usually I create my drafts in Google doc and then export it over to word for the final editing and submission, in the way you describe. This is why for this exercise I created a new word doc from scratch and then plugged in new references. Word is all working completely normally but when I return back to the separate google doc, it continues to offer me the "update" error notice.

    So to clarify:
    - I *think* my chrome is the default system, just with a personalised photo;
    - my PDF extension has been disabled and I do not appear to have any other extension;
    - I have total segregation between the google doc which I am experiencing issues with and the *new* Word doc I have created and I am now working on so that I can continue to write my paper;
    - trying to access my google doc on Edge, just routes me back through to my Google account (but this seems really obvious, so I'm not sure if I have just totally misunderstood what you are asking me to do!).

    Ok, so just to make sure we are on the same page, Word and Google Docs integrations and their corresponding errors are 99% of the time unrelated. So whether something works or doesn't on Word has no effect on Google Docs and vice-versa.

    I asked to install the Zotero Connector into Microsoft Edge (or if you don't like it you can do it with Firefox) and then attempt to insert Zotero citations in the same document that you are editing in Chrome with it. Please try that and report whether it works.
  • I installed Edge with the zotero connector and there is no issue, so it appears to be an issue with chrome, not with docs itself
