Zotero add/edit citation not working correctly with Word - Mac

When I try to insert a reference, the insert pane does not come up automatically - instead all I see is {Citation}. If I go to Zotero I can insert the reference, but when I do so the whole document changes from "No Markup" to "All Markup." This is true whether Track Changes is turned on or off.

Never had problems before, but just upgraded from my 2010 Macbook Pro running HIgh Sierra to this Macbook Air running Monterey and a newer version of Word.

    Update - seems to be working a little better now - I reinstalled the Word connector and can now insert references normally, though it still changes from "No Markup" to "All Markup". Fortunately, if I leave it in "Simple Markup" it can insert references and stay in "Simple Markup", so I can live with it.

    Still, not quite right... ;{)
