Cannot update zotero, fields do not work

Recently, fields no longer work on zotero for me- they will add into the document but when you click on them with the edit tool in word you get "you must insert a reference to edit" and it will not build a bibliography - it seems to only be inserting numbers that arent connected to anything. Additionally, fields in old documents no longer work either, so I have lost all my referencing in previous versions of things. Bookmarks will work, but are a bit harder to wrangle- I have no idea why this started happening. I also have attempted to update zotero to no avail:

getting the following errors:

You're using an ancient version of Zotero from 2016 — you're literally five years behind the current version.

Make a backup of your Zotero data directory, and then install Zotero 5 from the download page.

The certificate error that's preventing you from upgrading might go away after that, but if not, see SSL Certificate Error.

If you're still having a problem in your document after upgrading, see Troubleshooting Errors in Word Processor Documents, and start a new thread with the requested info after going through those steps.
  • did that right after posting- figured that was the problem, but lost all my references in an update on a different software once so have avoided it like the plague :P .... all set now. Thanks!
