Online library has references that are not in desktop library

Hello, I have an online zotero libary with 100 references. I wish to now use this in writing a paper in word. I downloaded zotero so I would have a desktop version too (I did not have this before). The downloaded zotero library is empty - even though I have hit edit>preferences>sync (I thought my 100 refs from my online zotero.org library would appear in the downloaded zotero, allowing me to cite while I write in word and access my refs). Can you help me?
