Management Style Request: Strategic Management Journal

Following the advice here: http://www.zotero.org/support/requesting_styles

In this post I will provide links to the desired style guide and the source style guide on which I believe it is based. If other folks care enough to help out, they can jump in and help to identify/analyze the differences between the journal's style and the source style.

From what I understand, someone else might eventually come along and create the style document from our efforts.

Based on the APA style?

  • It's been a few years since this post was made...did anyone find/make a CSL file for the Strategic Management Journal?
  • no.
Even 2 1/2 years back, the instructions for requesting articles
(which are now here: https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/wiki/Requesting-Styles ) included the requirement of a list of differences to an existing style.

As that page notes, finding a similar style has since become much easier, due to this:
    http://steveridout.com/csl/searchByExample/
and you may even find that the visual editor on that site allows you to make the needed changes yourself.

I tried the above links and there are no results for close matches. The Journal of Management Style (http://www.zotero.org/styles/journal-of-management) seems to be somewhat comparable, though.
  • My colleague made the SMJ style in CSL. I will check if he wants to share it and post it here.
  • That'd be great...
  • Here is the style. No guarantees that it is correct and the colleague does not currently have time to maintain it.

  • Thanks for sharing!

There are a few issues, e.g.,

    - the ampersand in front of the last author can be dropped
    - the full stop following the abbreviation of the authors' first names can be dropped
    - the journal volume needs to be bolded

However, this .csl version is a nice starting point. Thanks again.
  • Mikko - could you acertain that this is meant to be under CC license so that I can fix it up and put it on the repository?
  • (specifically, Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0, which we require for all styles in the repo)
  • Yes, this is Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 licensed.
  • this is now up with significant fixes
  • Unfortunately, I frequently receive an error message when I try to export a bundle of references in the SMJ style. Any idea why that could be the case?
  • not without the error message you receive.
  • "An error has occurred while trying to export the library. Please try again."
  • something sounds wrong - citation styles can't be used for export (only for create bibliography). What exactly are you doing to trigger that error?
  • You're right. I was trying to create a bibliography.
  • and that's the error message you get (I need the exact wording - if it's not in English provide the original)? Sorry, I'm still confused what's not working.
  • I'll give it another try:

I've created a folder in my library with a number of references. I would now like to create a bibliography to paste it into a conference presentation. I then right-click the collection and hit 'Create bibliography from collection'. Next, I choose the SMJ style. Zotero then produces the following error message (in German):

"Ein Fehler ist aufgetreten bei dem Versuch, das Literaturverzeichnis zu erstellen. Bitte erneut versuchen"

I think it's to do with the SMJ style as I've tried creating bibliographies in a number of other styles, all of which worked just fine. Any idea what causes this problem?
  • now it makes sense. It may have something to do with the style, but the style itself (assuming you have the version from the repository) is not the problem. If you _don't_ have the version from the repository, please update by reinstalling the style.

Then, instead of right-clicking on the collection, could you just select the collection on the left and then select all (ctrl+a) in the middle column --> right-click --> Create bibliography from selected items.

If that doesn't work, please provide an error report ID right after getting that error:

  • Just re-installing the SMJ style solved the problem, Adam. A new version was created last month which I didn't have installed yet. Many thanks and keep up the great work!
  • Hello, I just downloaded the style for SMJ. Isn't it supposed to have an indent after the first line, and be double spaced?

I know I can change this easily, but both the APA and AMR styles have those features.
  • hanging indent yes, double space probably not - doesn't say anything about that in the styleguide, at least.
The style is now fixed, with some other small fixes like et al in italics.
The updated version will appear on the repository within 30mins (check the timestamp). Update your copy of the style by clicking "Update Now" in the General tab of the Zotero preferences.

Styles also update automatically within 24hs for Zotero 4.0+
In an existing document, you may have to switch to a different style and back for the changes to take effect once the style is updated.
Any further problems please let us know & thanks for reporting
  • adam, thanks for the prompt reply. It seems like the small fixes were applied. However, the hanging indent is not present.
  • Adam,

My apologies, I stand corrected. Once I switched to another style, and then back, the hanging indent is now there. Thanks,
  • Adam,

I found another item that needs to be fixed. Per SMJ guidelines
"... Three or fewer authors should be written out at the first text citation and et al. used thereafter (italicize et al., whenever used)."

The current style does not make the use of "et al" after the first citation when three authors or two authors are used.
