MacWord Plugin does not find Word 2004

Hello everybody,
for some reason the word plugin does not find my Word 2004 but instead gives me this message: "Zotero MacWord Integration could not be installed because an error occurred. Neither Word 2004 nor Word 2008 appear to be installed on this computer. Please install Word, then try again." - I do however have Word 2004 on my computer and use it regularly. I checked and have the latest versions of Zotero, the MacWord plugin and PythonExt (I tried both the version on your website and that from the mozdev.org website). Do you have any ideas on what I could do? Getting this plugin to work would make referencing my paper this weekend sooo much easier!
Thanks a lot,
nina

What OS version do you have and where is Word 2004? The MacWord plug-in will find Word if it's installed in /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Microsoft Word (the default install location) and is supposed to find it even if it's installed elsewhere, although that may depend upon a variety of factors.

    EDIT: Fixed location.
  • I have OS 10.4.11, and Word is installed as part of the Microsoft Office Package, under Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Office/Microsoft Word - which was the default install location when I installed it at some point. So maybe I should try and move Word then to the location you're mentioned... I'll see whether that works.

Simon meant "/Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Microsoft Word".

I've never seen it installed to "/Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Office/Microsoft Word" (with the intermediate Office directory), and I see no references to that on the web. The Office directory should exist, but it should contain only ancillary programs.
  • Well, I did just try to move it manually to the location both of you mentioned, but it still does not work. Whatever the reason might be that it got installed there, how can I make the word plugin see it??
  • The main problem with simply moving Word for now is that I can't open it anymore, except for if I move it back to its original position. If I try to open it it asks me to move the application back into the Office folder... *sigh
Is there any way that I could 'show' the applications where my Word is? Or any more clever way to move Word rather than just moving the application item out of the folder with all the information it (but also the other applications there, hence Powerpoint etc) apparently need(s)?
  • What's the exact message you're receiving when trying to start up the relocated Word?
  • "Microsoft Word cannot load the Microsoft Office shared libraries. The files may have been moved from their original locations. Try the following:
    - Move Word back to the Microsoft Office folder (or the folder where it was originally installed).
    - Reinstall Word to make sure that all files are installed correctly."

I wouldn't mind reinstalling Word, but I'm currently studying abroad and did not bring installations CDs over here, hence would have to buy a new version...
  • If the plug-in installs successfully, you should be able to move Word back to where it was before, but I believe that it should function properly /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004.
  • Yeeeey, it works!!! :D Thanks so much for your advice and help!!!
I initially only moved Word, but when I moved every single Office folder / application, it worked again and I could install the ad-on. Thanks a lot!!!
  • OK, for what it's worth, these are the only files I have in the Microsoft Office 2004 folder:

    Additional Tools
    Clipart
    Icon?
    Installer Log File
    MSN Messenger.app
    Microsoft Entourage
    Microsoft Excel
    Microsoft PowerPoint
    Microsoft Word
    Office
    PDFMakerLib
    Read Me
    Shared Applications
    Templates
    Updater Logs

    Everything else is in Office.
