Related Objects : Collections

Hi,

I have known about Zotero since it first arrived on the scene. I was very excited about it but unfortunately the lack of features and the unserved promises of shared collections really just let me down right off the start..

But alas! Zotero 2.0 beta is a dramatic improvement. I am now fully prepared to use Zotero to its full potential. I am quite pleased with the updates and believe Zotero will serve of high utility to me. In all - great job so far :)

I have noticed one thing that bothers me and stands out as a "Ah jeeze" sort of stumble: You can't designate actual collection level (folders?) as related items. To me the collection represents a topic at whatever nested level. Typically each conceptual "topic" has more information concerning it than just a single item and so the topic is provided it's own collection - the multiple items mentioned being items in that collection.

In a subcollection relating to a 'topic' I usually provide a note who's first line reads "Research summary" which is well a summary of all the other items in this topical subcollection. I would love if I could relate collections.

I think you see the utility of what I'm saying. I hope its technically feasible for you.

Thanks.
  • Thanks for posting to the forums Idlework, relating collections is an interesting idea. I think most users nest sub-collections as a means to connect the work in individual collections. Beyond that, if you create your own vocabulary for relating items through tags you can develop some particularly sophisticated ways of relating sets of items across different collections. All of that is to say that there are ways to do something like what you are proposing with existing features. If other users are interested in this particular feature please feel free to post a message in this thread. Lastly, please do not bump messages. Frequently, with requests like this, the considerable number of Zotero community members that read all of the messages on these boards will let a message like this sit for a while to see if anyone else thinks a specific feature request is valuable.
