Using Colour to Identify Files

I love Zotero - but I like to use colour to differentiate files when I have a lot of content. For example, I'm doing a PhD now and will have a dissertation, as well as a book that I'm writing on a related topic. I'd really like to use different colours to distinguish files in what is becoming a long list of subfolders.

Is this possible with Zotero?

The answer provided by dstillman only regards colour tags. Like Bill Cole, I have a vast collection of references and a complex hierarchy of storage files, and being able to put the files (i.e. collections) in different colours in the left hand pane would be very very useful.

Is there any existing code for that, or could that be looked into by the Zotero coders?
