Upgrade StorageZotero Database and MS Bibliography not the same?

When I am trying to make changes to the citation in my Zotero database and then refresh my bibliography, the changes do not happen. The only way the changes can happen is if I manually edit but I'm working with different versions of my paper and thus I would prefer to only have the changes be in the Zotero fields in the database and then refreshed in all versions. In fact, it seems that they aren't linked at all (the database and bibliography). Is there any way to resolve this without having to completely unlink and relink all the citations?

If the citations are active but the bibliography is plain text, delete it and reinsert it.
