Changing a reference to one used earlier

In my Word document, I have a reference #4 and then several pages later, reference #16. Both referred to different citations.

I need to delete reference #16 and replace it with reference #4 at that location.

This will require all of the subsequent references to be updated (reference #17 should now become #16, etc).

Highlighting reference #6 in the document, selecting Add/Edit Citation, then deleting and adding reference #4 does not change the numbering. It remains #16 resulting in the same reference being listed in the bibliography at the #4 and # 16 spot.

The remaining reference numbers also do not change.

I've tried refreshing numerous times. I'ive also tried physically deleting reference #16 from my Zotero library and refreshing the Word document. The citation number #16 remains in the Word document. Physically deleting it within the Zotero Add/Edit function or within the Word document still does not result in the subsequent reference numbers updating.

Thanks for any guidance folks can provide!
  • Which citation style are you using? Generally this should just work:
Highlighting reference #16 in the document, selecting Add/Edit Citation, then deleting and adding reference #4 does not change the numbering.
  • I'm using AMA 11th edition.

The old #16 is to be deleted completely. In its place will be #4.

So, what was #17, #18, etc. should change to #16, #17, etc.

It looks like I have two issues:

    1. I cannot change #16. Using the Zotero Add/Edit Citation in Word, if I delete the old citation and change it to #4, it adds #4 a second time in the bibliography as #16 and leaves the citation number as #16 (when it should be #4).

    2. Reference numbers after #16 do not adjust even if #16 is deleted from the Zotero database. I've also tried deleting it from the Word document using the Zotero Add/In.
  • Check if you have "Automatically updated references" enabled in the Document Preferences? If not, try with in enabled.
  • Interesting.

"Automatically updated references" was enabled. So, I turned it off; added in my reference #4; refreshed, then deleted #16 (all within the Zotero Word add in).

It worked. Old reference #16 was gone. Reference #4 was cited it in its place, and the subsequent references renumbered correctly.

    Thanks for your help!
