Unlimited storage but files still taking up space

I have just created a new group library for a research project. I am the group owner, and have unlimited storage, so have been saving PDFs to the group library by storing them in Zotero (drag in from downloads and then delete from my computer). The idea was to use my unlimited storage in the Zotero cloud, rather than storing things on my personal Mac.

The issue is that copies of the PDFs are still saved in Zotero storage on my Mac once I've added them to the library, so they are taking up quite a bit of space. I thought the point of having cloud storage was that it wouldn't take up space on computers. Is there a way to use Zotero online storage without duplicates taking up space on my computer?

The main function of unlimited storage is for you to have access to all attachments online and on synced devices, not to save local storage space. That said, Zotero has announced that it will enable functionality to remove locally saved copied of files that have been synced after a customizable number of days, and that should mostly do what you want.
Devs have said that's going to be released relatively soon, but that's a purposefully vague term.
