Tagging - of item or associated pdf file? Should be both automatically
Greetings Zoterians! After importing metadata for a given PDF (journal) I get a Zotero Item with the PDF file as a child. I noticed that tagging operates separately for the Zotero Item versus tagging associated with the PDF. That is, I can have different tags for the Item and the PDF. This is confusing as the Item was created by the metadata import process ("Retrieve Metadata") and therefore both the Item and the PDF should have/share the same tags. This would also make sense when I am doing searches in my library.
So, for now, what should I be assigning my tags to, the Item or the PDF? Both would be double the work. Note that it is difficult to tag many PDFs as the default viewing mode of Zotero is to hide child information... and so I would have to expand every Item to show the PDF I want to tag. Would Zotero be planning to resolve the tagging inconsistency? I suppose all of this would apply to the "Related" information as well.
If the answer is to tag and select "related" info at the Item level only and not the child PDF, then I think this unreasonably assumes that all the PDF's would be a child of an item. There are many PDFs that I cannot find metadata for without some work and I do not always have the time to make an item for... which means I have many PDFs that are parent-less. Even though they are parent-less (not a child of an item) I would like to tag and assign related files to them. Then down the road when I do find the metadata or manually create an item for the PDF I would like tags and related linkages to be passed automatically onto the Item. Currently Zotero does not do this which means that the tagging and related info I have assigned to many parent-less PDFs needs to manually reproduced at the item level. This is not efficient workflow.
Thanks in advance for any advice/feedback.
P.S. Zotero is changing the way I work. I really appreciate all the creative and hard work.
