Zotero won't open in Windows "Not Responding"

I just added the BBT, restarted Zotero, it updated libraries, then tried to restart again, and won't. I get the windows spinner, when I click on the app window I get "Not Responding." Have uninstalled and reinstalled, no change. Took several attempts and computer reboots to get the BBT to properly show "keep updated" in the bibtex exporter yesterday so I suspect it is the culprit. The other possibility is it is trying to talk to a .bib on the cloud. But since I can't get in to zotero to redirect, not sure how to fix. Thought the uninstall/reinstall would solve it.

Any help appreciated as I am completely blocked from work with no citation manager.

Thanks!
  • Delete BBT from the 'extensions' folder in your Zotero profile directory to start up without BBT and then reset translators from the Advanced → Files and Folders pane of the Zotero preferences.

Assuming that fixes the problem, you can then debug further with @emilianoeheyns.
  • Can you set aside a copy of your profile before you do that?
  • Yes, deleting the folder worked (my 16 showed me to click to delete personal files when using the uninstall utility.) Interestingly, my library was preserved and links were intact. Putting the BBT add-in back kills it again though so I am not sure how to have live library updating. My whole goal was to use within overleaf, but I will just write in Word.

    Thank you!
  • I really want to fix this. Can I get a copy of your profile when BBT is installed?
  • I don't regularly use Windows, but I've done an install just now, and BBT doesn't seem to be interfering with anything; but this is an almost empty library. I really need to get either a support log or a copy of the profile to get to the bottom of this.
  • I've started it with a larger DB (24k items), and while startup is very slow (23 seconds to get to the schemaupdatepromise resolve, but also 20 seconds to load the citekeys for search), I see no other detrimental effects. I'll make citekey search optional so one can skip it if one wants, but I'll really need a copy of the malfunctioning profile, as I know no other way to replicate this.

Citekey-search load is already happening in a transaction, and I see that Zotero uses cached statements by default, and it's an in-memory DB; I don't know what else I could do to speed this load up. But it doesn't seem to be the cause for the behavior described by @cmdyck.
