Unlinked citations in Google Docs.

I am having trouble with unlinked citations in Google Docs while working on my Master thesis. It seems that all of my citations came unlinked at some point. Zotero did not notify me until I tried adding new citations which was much later. The bibliography is still there, however.

I believe the problem happened when I copy-paste between documents to use Grammarly. Grammarly does not work well with long documents, therefore I copy-paste the text between documents to fix the text. Zotero loads when I copy it, so I believed this would work without any trouble. However all of my citations have become unlinked and a version with correctly linked citations is too old, so I can't really go back.

Another problem arose when I was trying to link them again. Google docs crash when I try to do so. It updates them, but then it stops working and I cannot write anything or update any more citations. Also, the citations looked something like "{[1]" or "Upda{[4]" with "javascript void{0}" (if I remember correctly) at the bottom.

I have a Zotero connector in my toolbar on Firefox. I am working alone in this document so no other could have caused this.
  • There is nothing we can do to help with citation relinking. You'll either need to restore the document to an earlier version or reinsert them manually. Copy-pasting should generally-work, although you when copying text with citations you have to make sure that the newly opened Google Doc is fully loaded or Zotero won't be able to capture the paste and ensure citations remain linked. When pasting text with Zotero citations you should see a Zotero overlay while Zotero works.

If you are seeing problems with citation relinking you'll need to include more details about what steps you're taking and what's happening, whether it's reproducible, and include a Report ID from Zotero.
