import citation into zotero doesn't go into library

I have set up a library specific for an assignment I'm doing and I've imported several references into it but they're not being imported directly into the library but as separate folders distinct from that library and I cannot move them into the library.

I am new to Zotero, more familiar with Endnote, where all you needed to do was the above and the citation was in the specified library not its own library.

I have a screenshot but unable to attach.

You seem to have a bit of a misunderstanding.

When you click on the top-level icon for a library, that shows all of the items in the library, regardless of whether they are in any collections. So if you import a bibliography file and it makes a new collection, the items will also show up when you view the top-level library.

When you import from a bibliography file, there is a checkbox in the import dialogue to control whether a new collection (folder) is made for these items (versus only adding them to the library without the collection). You can uncheck this box to prevent making a new collection.

Note that import like this is probably not the way you want to be adding items to your library going forward. The best approach is usually to use the Save to Zotero button from your web browser toolbar. See https://www.zotero.org/support/adding_items_to_zotero
