Adding citation consistently crashes Word on PC

I have Microsoft Access Professional Plus 2016, and Zotero version 5.0.96 on Windows 10. For the last couple days trying to add a citation to a word doc crashes word. Last time this happened, once Word restarted I closed all but one document I had open and tried again, and the zotero plugin worked for a bit. Today it happened again, and again closing the other documents I had open allowed me to add citations without issue. I don't want to keep intentionally crashing Word because cleanup takes a long time, but it appears the problem is related to having multiple documents open. Please advise.
