Zotero APA 7th edition citation format is wrong
Hi,
I recently submitted an assessment paper at uni, and was told by my professor that my APA citation format was wrong. To be honest it looked wrong to me too, but that was what Zotero presented me with, so I used it. The current format in Zotero comes out as (for example):
(Liao et al., 2018)
Note the period after et al. There should be no period there, and instead it should be at the end of the citation, for example: (Liao et al, 2018). and this is consistent with what I have read online about APA referencing too, as well as what the professor told me.
Now, I have tried going to file -> preferences and editing the style as per instructions found online. Even though I can delete/change every instance of et al in the html formatting, it still appears in the real time CS style editing window. I've tried saving it as a unique .CSL instance (As per the online instructions) but it stubbornly still presents me with "et al."
My editing of the file is definitely having some impact, as if I break anything (eg remove a ">" symbol) I immediately get a parsing error in the bottom window. I can also make the author details disappear in the reference section (but never the citation section) and unfortunately that is all I appear to be able to do.
So, how do I edit the citation so it prints out correctly? Ideally Zotero will fix this in due course, but I need to submit another research paper before Monday (today being Saturday) and I doubt you are going to correct the issue before then. Failing this I am going to have to manually edit my final document and manually insert the citation for every instance, and that is going to be a serious pain in the proverbial.

See the official APA style page here https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/citations/basic-principles/author-date
We can help you to properly edit a style to remove that, but if your department and Professor are asking for APA style, I suggest showing your professor that a period is actually used in that style. The Zotero APA is carefully checked against the APA manual and yields correct citations.
