bibtext import problem: not working

ID 605700774

Hello! There seems to be a basic problem with importing .bib files for me. I tried several well-formed files and keep receiving error reports that they are not well-formed:

[JavaScript Error: "XML Paring Error: not well-formed etc.

I even tried first to export some existing entries to bibtex format (which worked), then to import them again, and it did not work (same error message as above).

Is there a major problem, or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help!
Sven
  • [JavaScript Error: "TypeError: this.titleCaseLowerCase is undefined" {file: "chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/translation/translate_firefox.js line 425 > eval" line: 1273}]
It looks like you previously had Better BibTeX installed and its custom translators weren't removed on uninstall (cc @emilianoeheyns).

Reset translators from the Advanced → Files and Folders pane of the Zotero preferences and this should be fixed.

Alternatively, if you're actually using a BibTeX-based workflow, rather than simply using it as a generic data transfer format, you should reinstall BBT.
  • That was fast! Thanks a lot indeed! This fixed the issue. Actually it was the first time I imported anything from BibTeX, so I have no idea how the translator got installed in the first place.
  • You had to have installed the Better BibTeX plugin at some point previously (perhaps for one of its non-BibTeX-related features).
  • Yes, that must be the case. Anyway, many thanks for figuring this out so quickly! I would have never been able to fix it by myself. Perhaps it would be a good idea to give a hint in the error message. It just said "Check the file", but the file was OK (as a BibTeX file).
  • Update: Now I see, on my other computer, where BBT is still installed, that in the Extensions tab there is a warning: "Zotero Better Bib(La)Tex is incompatible with Zotero 5.0.96".
  • The only situation where I know this can happen is if BBT was installed in Zotero 4 before upgrading to 5 and BBT was not reinstalled after. In all other circumstances that I've seen the uninstall works, and in the 4-to-5 scenario there's nothing I can do. Still, that would have to mean that @SvenSellmer would have had BBT installed in 4 and not imported a single bib file until now.
  • The last scenario is true. Until now, I have never worked with .bib files. Therefore, I am quite astonished that I apparently did install BBT at all.
  • Our messages overlapped, but that is exactly the scenario I meant, and there's nothing I can do. Before the upgrade, BBT can't anticipate it would need to de-install, and after, it won't run at all, so I can't clean up.
  • No problem, I am glad the problem is solved for me. Thanks a lot for your help!
