Scopus DIRECT Import

For the past three months since I have started "testing" Zotero, I have not been able to get direct RIS import from Scopus working (on more than one computer, OS and version). Is anyone else experienceing the same problem? I can import from Scopus only by actually click the gear and then find the RIS file downloaded and import. I have never got direct RIS file import working from Scopus (worked a few times on other sites). In the options, I already checked "Use Zotero to download RIS/Refer files". Any tips? Suggestions? Am I the only one experiencing this problem?

Tested under these environment:
OS: Win 7RC, XP32&64, Vista 32
Both Firefox Portable and Installed version
Both version 1.5 and version 2 beta.

Thanks.
  • always provide a sample URL -
but for what it's worth: RIS often doesn't work when sites don't mark the files as RIS. That would be hard to correct for Zotero, unfortunately.
  • What I don't understand is why when the RIS file is downloaded, the RIS file import no problem but Zotero cannot directly handle the RIS file import in-browser.

Here is a sample directly link if anyone wants to try (Require institution subscription). http://www.scopus.com/citation/output.url?origin=recordpage&eid=2-s2.0-69049097945&src=s&view=CiteAbsKeywsRefs

That URL should attemp to retrieve an article called "fMRI activation during spike and wave discharges evoked by photic stimulation". I normally just select RIS and the download type. The RIS file retrieve should contain these:

    TY - JOUR
T1 - fMRI activation during spike and wave discharges evoked by photic stimulation
    JF - NeuroImage

Again, like I said, import fine once you have the RIS file. Just never directly when you first click the download it seems. Odd. Let me know if you can get direct import working.

BTW, if the site is providing non-standard compliant RIS files, is there anyway to ID that in the RIS file itself?
  • don't have a subscription, but here is what dan wrote about this in another context
File extensions are generally irrelevant on the web. File types are identified through MIME types in the Content-Type HTTP header, and journals.cambridge.org (and presumably SpringerLink) is returning "Content-Type: text/txt" for the RIS/etc. downloads rather than application/x-research-info-systems or application/x-endnote-refer (though, as adamsmith notes, the translator works fine for that site, so this isn't necessary).
that's what I meant with "mark". When you import the RIS file it doesn't have that problem because you're already telling Zotero it's an RIS file.

He also has this useful bit of information:
In cases where the translator is broken and you have a RIS file that doesn't import directly, you can save the file, drag it back into the Firefox browser window, and use the address bar icon rather than using Import or Import from Clipboard. It should then save into the currently selected collection.
