Inserting footnote creates 3 empty lines above the citation

When I insert a citation as footnote (Chicago 17 full note) into word (365, windows 10) the footnote appears at the bottom of the page, but with 3 blank lines between the separator line and the footnote. I can't click on that area to delete them manually, only when I delete the entire footnote.

  • You need to look at the Footnote style in Word, which likely has a large top margin set.
  • This is a (silly) Word default. Click the View tab in the ribbon and select the Draft view on the left side. Then, click References and click Show Footnotes. In the popup at the bottom of the screen, delete the blank lines at the top of Footnote and Footnote Continuation.

You may want to do this in a blank document and save it as your new default Normal template.
