Enable adding citations by pubmed id in the citation box in Google Docs

Currently searching for citations with pubmed id in the citation box doesn't seem to work.
Different people have different workflows. Many in the biomed field first write their papers with pubmed ids as citations. So it would be easier to cite using zotero if zotero add citation dialog would search citations by pubmed ids. It doesn't seem to be able to do that. Within the zotero app, searching by pubmed id seems to work correctly though. The problem comes only when trying to add citations. So the current workaround ends up being longer: Go to pubmed, search the pubmed id, find the title and then use it in the zotero add citation box.
  • Not sure I understand. Are you asking for Zotero to find items in your library from the citation dialog based on PMID, or for Zotero to add items to your library from the citation dialog? The former could happen. The latter is unlikely to happen, since Zotero is designed around adding things to your library before citing them.
So the current workaround ends up being longer: Go to pubmed, search the pubmed id, find the title and then use it in the zotero add citation box.
I mean, that's not the workaround. The workaround is just to look at the title in Zotero. Why would you need to go to PubMed?
  • There's an open ticket for searching by identifier in the citation addon based on a similar request https://github.com/zotero/zotero/issues/1865
  • Thanks adamsmith!

dstillman, yes I do that as well. It's just sometimes that title is not in my library and I need to use pubmed. Eitherway, the point is that add citation dialog should enable search with identifiers.
  • You didn’t answer my question about which you’re asking for, though. As I say, we’re unlikely to support saving an item from the citation dialog, so you’d still have needed to have previously saved the item either by going to PubMed (or any site items might come from) or by using Add Item by Identifier. That part wouldn’t change.
  • dstillman, please don't overthink this.

Forget everything and understand that the problem is just that:
Add citation dialog should enable search with identifiers like pubmed id. This is for the purpose of citing not saving or anything else. And yes it's about citing papers that are already existing in my collection. Please forget any other interpretations you have about this issue.

Is that simple enough for you to understand?
And like adamsmith said the issue is also open at https://github.com/zotero/zotero/issues/1865

Don't talk to people like this here again or you'll be banned.

I'm trying to make sure you're understanding what's actually possible now and what the GitHub issue is actually for. You initially said the workaround for the lack of the feature you're requesting was to "Go to pubmed, search the pubmed id, find the title and then use it in the zotero add citation box". That only makes any sense if you either don't know that you can search by PMID in Zotero itself or if what you're asking for is the ability to save things to Zotero from the citation dialog by PMID. The former has always been possible and the latter is unlikely to happen.

If you understand that now, great. Your initial post suggested that you didn't.
