Unable to export bibliography from Word to Zotero

I have been trying to download the word bibliography style sheet so that I can import my current bibliography list (typed out in a word doc.) into Zotero. Can anyone help please? I am a complete computer novice and am very new to Zotero. Trying to avoid manual input of 50+ references if I can....

Thanks in advance - Amber
  • Can you say more about what exactly you tried and what happened?

    https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/importing_formatted_bibliographies
  • It says 'Import Word style sheet and save' but I do not know how to save. When I click on the link it just opens a new tab with the bibtex info on it.

I don't know how to post an image of what I see. Do you know how I make the bibtex save to word?
  • It doesn’t say “Import Word style sheet and save” anywhere on the page dstillman linked to?

The instructions are to download the BibTeX style sheet for Word. Do that by clicking the “Word bibliography stylesheet” link (or right clicking it and choose Download Linked File).

Then, when you are downloading the file, it needs to go to the folder listed on that page. If a Save window pops up when you are downloading the file, navigate to the indicated folder and save there. If they file just automatically downloads to your Downloads folder, in your computer’s file system, copy the file then paste it in the correct Word folder.

Once the style sheet is in Word’s style sheet folder, you can select BibTeX as a style in Word’s bibliography feature and then import the BibTeX into Zotero.
  • How do I find the Word folder to save it into? I am struggling to find that on my laptop. Sorry - I literally have no idea with computers! I don't know how to access my C drive
  • So I managed to get as far as 'save as' to c drive>users>my username> but then 'appdata' does not exist here. I have office 365
  • AppData is hidden on Windows by default.

The easiest approach is just to copy the file path from the page I linked to, then paste it into the address bar in File Explorer and replace your username, then type Enter.

Otherwise, here are steps to make Hidden folders visible on Windows https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/view-hidden-files-and-folders-in-windows-10-97fbc472-c603-9d90-91d0-1166d1d9f4b5
  • Thanks for this. I found the file place by searching on the c drive and saved the link there but now it is still not showing up in word when I try to select it as a style. I did a restart in case it needed to reboot. But nothing.

Can you say exactly where you saved the file?

Can you take a screenshot of the file in place, upload the screenshot somewhere (e.g., Dropbox), and provide a link here?
  • C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Bibliography\Style

I copied and pasted the above into my search bar and saved the file into the 'Style' folder that this brought up.

When I say I saved it, I had it saved within my downloads folder so i cut and pasted it from Downloads into the above folder. I had no other option as when I tried to 'save as' from the web page that Zotero provides it would not allow me to find the folder to save it into. The 'style' folder had numerous of the same file types in it already that were labelled with the different Word Bibliography style types, like APA and Chicago. However, when I go into a new Word doc and try to change the style using the drop down, BibTex is not an available option.

I'm honestly losing heart. I thought exporting my current bibliography would be relatively simple and fool-proof.

Does it have the same icon as the other files? If you right-click and choose Properties, does the full name end in .xsl or .xsl.txt? (If you have file extensions hidden, which they are by default, it may be hard to see this just from the regular File Explorer windows.)
  • Yes exactly the same icon and it says .xsl
  • Thank you both for your help in this matter. I think it is looking like I shall have to manually input my bibliography. I think I shall just do this. Thanks anyway!
