Tips for adding citation in LibreOffice while writing without accidentally editting the citation?

Hi again. Separate issue.

I often want to add my citations while I'm writing a sentence. Say I write

"Klein proposed this theory in 1960"

add the citation for (Klein 1960), and then keep writing?

"Klein proposed this theory in 1960 (Klein 1960). In 1988, someone else said... bla bla bla..."

What happens then is that everything from the citation in is interpreted as a part of the citation (I always leave highlighting on so I can see this happening). Usually what I do then is write it like this:

"Klein proposed this theory in 1960 (add ref here) ."

then later add the ref and remove the safety space, making sure the period is not part of the citation. But then, sometimes later on I want to edit the sentence, say, to change the period with a comma. Inevitably, the added comma becomes part of the citation. Sometimes I avoid this by adding the comma after the period and only then removing the period, which works but is kind of annoying. Sometimes I forget those safety measures and have to delete the citation and start over. Does anyone not have this issue, or has found a way to work around it that is more fluid?
