edit in-text citation in google doc

Hi! I would like to sometimes change the in-text citation to show only the year so that I can write something like "Smith et al, (1992) thinks this very smart thing." Or I may want to add a figure number into the same brackets as the citations (Figure 1; Smith et al., 1992). What is the best way to edit an in-text citation?
