A legal commentary is a document type, commonly found in European civil law systems. It provides a critical interpretation of the articles and sections of a law. Structurally, a legal commentary volume or loose leaf collection is organised like the law which it comments: Section by section (or another meaningful subdivision), it first cites the text of the law, followed by the section’s commentary per se. The whole volume may be written by a single author, but often it’s curated by one or more editors and each section is written by another author.
While this resembles the item types book and book chapter, citation styles may require a different handling. Hence, this new item type was introduced.
