Citation style update request: SBL Handbook of Style 2nd ed. (full note)
The SBL Handbook of Style 2nd edition specifies how many of the common publications in the field ought to be abbreviated for purposes of citation.
E.g., one should use "JBL" for "Journal of Biblical Literature."
The SBL Handbook of Style 2nd edition (full note) citation style makes up its own abbreviations.
E.g., if "Journal of Biblical Literature" is in the "Publication" field in Zotero, this citation style will automatically give "J. Biblic. Lit." as the publication name in a footnote in Word.
In this example, Zotero would use "J. Biblic. Lit." regardless of whether I put the correct abbreviation (JBL) in the "Journal Abbr" field in Zotero or leave the "Journal Abbr" field blank. The only way to get the correct abbreviation to show up in my document is to put JBL in the "Publication" field.
This can be a hassle, as most of the time on import, the full publication name is pulled in. It's nice to see the full name of the journal in Zotero, especially with some of the less commonly-encountered journals.
Can I request a citation style update so that either (1) the citation style will check the "Journal Abbr" field in Zotero and use what it finds there or, even better, (2) the list of abbreviations prescribed in ยง8.4.1 could somehow be "baked in" to the citation style (thus, "Journal of Biblical Literature" in the Publication field would always come out as "JBL" in a document).
Thanks for your consideration!
