Numbering references in the text

The numbering of the references in the text in Word, e.g. (1), always starts at 1, even though the articles are different. Why is that? What can I do so that each reference has a unique number?

How are you adding citations to Word?

To use a numbered style, you need to be using the Word plugin. If you just use Quick Copy, every citation will always be 1.

If you're using the Word plugin and are seeing (1) after reopening an existing document, see Existing Citations Not Detected.

Yes, I am using the Word plug in. And it is not the first time I am using Zotero, but I am not very familiar with it.. However, it is the first time this happens.

OK, so as I say, if it's an existing document, see the linked page for ways that the citations in the document could've been flattened.

It sounds like you have "Automatically update citations" disabled in the plugin's document preferences:
