Add FamilySearch Books to supported sites

When I access a book on familysearch.com Books, I want the item type to be 'book', so the relevant fields are filled in. How do I get this support? Virginia
  • Also, the New York Public Library should be recognized as a library and the item type should be 'book'.

  • Familysearch.com has pretty poor metadata -- this could absolutely be coded by someone highly motivated, but I don't think it'd be a priority for any of the regulars.
NYPL works for me. Where exactly are you looking?
  • For NYPL, I am looking in the catalogue and see, for example:
    Author Hull, Edward F.
Title Early records of Putnam County, Georgia, 1807-1860 : old cemeteries, wills, and marriages / compiled by Edward F. Hull.
    Imprint Ashland, Ala. : E.F. Hull, [197-?]

This should be enough to see that it is a book.

For Family Search, if I am in the Books section, the url should show that this is the book section: https://www.familysearch.org/library/books. Wouldn't this be enough to indicate the item type should be Book?

Thank you for your reply. Virginia
  • For NYPL, what I'm saying is that the catalog as I'm seeing it does import books as such, including for the one you point to:
https://browse.nypl.org/iii/encore/record/C__Rb11302443__SEarly records of Putnam County, Georgia__Orightresult__U__X6?lang=eng&suite=def

-- what's the URL where it isn't working for you?

Family Search: Zotero could tell it's a book, but it can't reasonably infer the other publication details because they're not available in a machine-readable format -- when people see the book icon from Zotero, they should expect that all or at least most publication details are imported. As I say, this would probably be _possible_ to do, but not high priority because it's going to be a lot of work for something pretty fragile.
  • I tried the NYPL search again and got the same result - web page. Then I tried 'Save to my lists' and 'View saved lists' that the library provides. At that point, the Zotero icon changes to book (https://catalog.nypl.org/record=b10696587~S1). So I see that this is how I should get the item type Book.

    Thanks for your help.
  • I'm glad that works, but it shouldn't be necessary -- if you can get me a URL where it shows the webpage item but should show a book, I can certainly take a look.
  • It seems there are two ways to search:
If I search from http://catalog.nypl.org/search/t and fill in the title in the ‘search for’ field with Funderburk history and heritage, I get item type web page.

If I use the large Search button at the top right and fill in ‘Enter Search Keyword’ (http://catalog.nypl.org/record=b13678777~S1) and click on the book I want, I get the item type book.

It must just be what the library presents from those two ways of entering the title.

I’m use to using the first method, but it’s no problem to use the second. Thanks for following up.
