Sorry for being dense...can you answer a basic question?

Hello. I read about Zotero in Inside Higher Ed. (IHE) and just registered as a new account. I still don't quite know what Zotero may accomplish for me. I think I can infer what it is all about by re- (and re- !) reading the basic info on the Zotero website.

But what I'm still not sure about is: Does Zotero serve as a word processing program; once Zotero is "on" my computer (I didn't want to download it until I got this new discussion query answered), will it cancel out MSWord and Pages (I have a Mac system); or can I use any word-processing system and use Zotero simply as some sort of orgnizational app to help me manage citations, sources, readings, etc.?

My apologies for being kind of dense. I'm a technophobe at heart and don't always "get" what resources do or do not obtain from apps I'm unfamiliar with. FYI, I'm a tenured professor at an R2 institution, possibly looking at retiring within the next 6-7 yr. or so.
