Question about items with an organization as an author

How do I get Zotero to use an organization as the author name in a reference?

For example, if I'm citing an annual report and the author is "Big Named Company, Inc." I would want an APA style citation to look like:

Big Named Company, Inc. (2019). Annual report to sharehoders. Retrieved from http://www.sec.gov

But I tend to end up with:

Inc, B. (2019) ....
  • My employer's style guidance is to use abbreviations of author organizations in in-text citations, e.g., "(UNICEF 2020)." Then the full reference specifies the full name of the organization, i.e., "United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), 2020, ..."

Is there any way to get Zotero to do that? I'm guessing not but it would be an unexpected delight.
  • You may use the field "Short Title". For example, the expanded version (Big Named Company, Inc.) is entered into the 'Institution' as well as the 'Author' fields. Use the abbreviation (BNC in this case) for the Short Title.

    I'm confused, @ruwan

or are you confusing the author field with the title fields
  • @kfwb In the very early days of Zotero I had to something similar for my doctoral thesis. I used Word's search and replace (don't replace all!) in the final version without Zotero field codes. Enter "United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund" in the Zotero author field and in the final version replace the full name with UNICEF. Then in the reference list, edit the entry by adding "(UNICEF)" to the full name. As a Better alternate you could simply have UNICEF as the author and edit the bibliography to add the full agency name without needing to do any search/replace. I only realized later that I did it the difficult way first and could have simply edited only the bibliography.
  • Thanks @adamsmith and @DWL-SDCA! Thanks also, @ruwan - and I'd be grateful if you have a little time to elaborate
