Zotero not retrieving valid DOI's

Error Report: 1274469226

on Zotero 5.0.90 on macos 10.14.6

Zotero has begun to repeatedly fail to add valid doi's using the Magic Wand eg https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cell.2016.01.013

I switched off Firewall (Lulu) and tried adding refs to other collections but problem persists.

Thanks
  • I can confirm that I have been experiencing the same problem since at least yesterday (September 5th, 2020). Example of DOI not being resolved:

    https://doi.org/10.1016/0007-6813(71)90037-1

  • Meantime, I've resorted to adding Bibtex from Google Scholar.

Further investigation suggests a Translator error?

    Latest from Debug Log:

Translate: Translation using Airiti failed: No items returned from any translator downloadAssociatedFiles => true automaticSnapshots => true

The Crossref servers are returning a Service Unavailable error for a metadata request (which is different from a normal web request for the above URL). This isn't a problem in Zotero itself and there's nothing we can do about it. They'll need to fix it on their end.
  • @strandbygaard Thanks. What's your OS?
  • edited September 6, 2020
This has nothing to do with the OS, nor is it a translator problem.
  • @dstillman thanks for checking. At least there's other options than manual entry :)
  • @dm5n I'm running MacOS latest. I doubt it's computer/os/local issue.

I have used that feature a lot, my setup hasn't changed, and it basically just stopped working.

I does look like adding to the library online through zotero.org is working
  • @strandbygaard That's an excellent method, thanks, I hadn't used it. Autosyncs to local client like magic :)
  • @dstillman thanks :-) To satisfy my curiosity - do you know why lookup through zotero.org is still working?
  • edited September 6, 2020
It isn't, reliably. I'm getting regular errors trying to resolve DOIs in the web library. (You can test more easily, without creating items, with ZoteroBib.)

The Crossref metadata service isn't down completely, but it's failing more often than not.
  • @dstillman makes sense. I also couldn't get it to work online yesterday, but at least one article resolved today - but I also only tried that one :-) Great idea with zoterobib.
  • Perhaps minor point: PMID's seem to work, but not doi's – on local client eg 32226285/ doi: 10.7150/ijbs.45053
  • PMIDs are resolved through PubMed, not Crossref.
