How do you manually add information to generate a citation from a pdf on zotero

I have documents which are pdfs and I want to manually add in the author year of publication it won't let me do this on zotero. I think that it is something to do with the metadata? No option comes up at the side to add any details Can anyone help me?

If Zotero wasn't able to retrieve metadata for the PDF, you need to either add an item another way and drag the PDF item on top of it or right-click and choose Create Parent Item and enter data manually. Read through Retrieve PDF Metadata to better understand how this works. You should always avoid entering data manually if you can help it.
