Bright white font and appearance, can't see anything
First I lost my entire library, now I can't see anything - everything is bright white, the font is white, I have to highlight to see any text, there are no view or appearance options. My Mac is in dark mode but switching to light mode or auto mode does not changer anything. HELP
This is almost certainly related to your dark mode settings. If you haven't restarted after switching to light mode, do that first. If that doesn't help, open Terminal from Spotlight and run this command:
defaults delete -g NSRequiresAquaSystemAppearance
Then restart and try again.
defaults delete -g NSRequiresAquaSystemAppearance
2020-08-24 11:52:34.709 defaults[833:11435]
Domain (kCFPreferencesAnyApplication) not found.
Then restarted again.

Also trying to restore the library:
1. zotero.sqlite file in default directory is 971kb
2. there is a 'sotrage' folder with subfolders and dates corresponding to my previous usage of zotero
3. current data directory is in default location
4. last used Zotero Aug 22nd 2020, only change since then is changing to dark mode on mac
5. tried backup/restore steps here https://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data#restoring_your_zotero_library_from_a_backup1
Edit: tried backup/restore steps here https://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data#restoring_your_zotero_library_from_a_backup1 -- not sure what that means exactly. Did you have a back-up? Did you use an automatic back-up? What were the sizes of the .sqlite files for those?
You didn't answer this part:
Tried backup/restore steps as in, copied the 'storage' folder elsewhere, changed the Zotero folder to Zotero-Old, and then made a new Zotero folder, and pasted the 'storage' folder there. Didn't work.
"Restoring Your Zotero Data From a Backup
If you were not using Zotero syncing (or were but don't want to perform a full sync) and have a backup of your Zotero data directory, you can restore your library by replacing your active data directory with your backed-up data directory.
Open the Advanced pane of the Zotero preferences and make a note of the specified path under Data Directory Location. (By default, this will be “Zotero” within your home directory.) Click “Show Data Directory”, which should reveal your active data directory containing zotero.sqlite and possibly a 'storage' subdirectory. Close Zotero, move one level up in the filesystem (Cmd-up-arrow on macOS, Alt-up-arrow on Windows), and rename the directory to “Zotero-Old”. Next, copy the data directory from your backup to the original location (e.g., “Zotero”).
When you reopen Zotero, you should see your restored Zotero data.
Once you've successfully restored your data, you can delete the “Zotero-Old” folder, but it's a good idea to keep it for a while until you're sure your data is correct.
Note that, if you were using Zotero syncing, any changes you made to your library since the backup and subsequently synced to your online library will be applied to your restored database as soon as you sync. If you don't want that to happen, see the following section."
Name: zotero.sqlite
Size: 971 kb
Date: Aug 24 2020
Name: zotero.sqlite-journal
Size: 91 kb
Date: Aug 24 2020
If you have a 'storage' folder with subfolders with dates going back a while but have no other zotero.sqlite files in the parent directory, then something on your system — perhaps some sort of extremely misguided cleaning tool — deleted the .sqlite file and all of the normal backups Zotero makes in that directory.
If you can't find other, larger copies of zotero.sqlite anywhere else, and you weren't using Zotero syncing, your only option would be to restore from a backup of the Zotero data directory.
