Feature request: type specific columns in the main library view?

I'd like to be able to choose all possible columns in the main library view. Currently it appears to not allow one to choose columns which are not valid for all types of items. For example, Journal Articles have volumes and issues but Conference Proceedings don't. I'd like to be able display Volume and Issue in my main library view anyway, and just have the field show blank for objects which are of the incorrect type.

Is this by design, or just because it's never been implemented and/or takes a while to implement?

    It's by design, but making all (or more) fields available has been a fairly common request that should probably be implemented.
