Citing issues in Word for Mac

I cannot stop the spinning beach ball which is coming up in every word document I open now. I have tried closing word and zotero, repairing permissions, etc. Nothing seems to work. Do you have a solution?

I am on a Macbook Air using Catalina Version 10.15.5 and have Microsoft Word for Mac Version 16.38
