When I go to "document preferences" and change from vancouver to Chicago style, it does change all the old references to chicago style. How do I do this? I click OK and refresh and nothing happens. I've also tried restarting everything.

Changing styles should change all citations to the new style. It sounds like some of the citations are no longer active/connected to Zotero and are just plain text. See here: https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/existing_citations_not_detected
