Citations disappear when changing format in Openoffice

When I try to change the Zotero document preferences in Open Office from a note format to (author,date) format, I get an error message and the existing notes in the document have disappeared. That's formating using reference marks (not bookmarks). No problem using the note format initially, just when I attempt to change to (author,date) style. Suggestions?
OOo 3.21.0, Zotero 1.0.10, Mac OSX 10.5.6
