Copying from One Word Document to another

Can anyone assist me in copying zotero references from one word document to another word document along with the copied text? I am working in separate work documents on different topics with references cited in each word document separately. When I copy/past to merge my work in another word document, zotero citation links are lost and I need to rework to add citation from library one by one, which requires double labor

This just works. If they're active citations, you can copy them between documents and click Refresh in the target document to update them. Citations are in no way linked to the document they're created in.

If that's not happening, the citations aren't active in the source document or something is happening to the data while in your clipboard.

How to check whether the citations are active? I copy the citations from one document to another. However, the citations in the target document seem to be not active and I cannot use refresh to update them.
