Citations renumbered back to "1" in the middle of the document

I had been working on my laptop and everything was gong fine. I switched to my desktop and for some reason now when I add a new citation Zotero has started to renumber the citations back to "1". I already have about 60 references and am so frustrated. The new citations appear correctly numbered in the bibliography. I have tried switching in and out of styles (e.g. from AMA to APA) and that didn't fix it. I have 'refreshed' and that didn't help. It's like Zotero doesn't recognize the beginning part of the paper--but it adds the new citations to the reference list--makes no sense!!! Please help!!
